America's Promise
America’s Promise — The Alliance for Youth grew out of the
Presidents’ Summit for America’s Future in 1997. The summit
was sponsored by the Points of Light Foundation, the
Corporation for National and Community Service and United
Way of America. These organizations were among the founding
partners of the America’s Promise Alliance. Retired General
Colin L. Powell became the Alliance’s founding chairman.
Today, Alma Powell serves as chair of the Alliance.
America's Promise works to insure that's today's children
are provided with five fundamental resources (called them
the Five Promises) in order to thrive. These five resources
are: caring adults, safe places, a healthy start, effective education,
and opportunities to help others.
United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast
Our local United Way's site provides a wealth of useful information about community
resources, special initiatives, and United Way affiliated agencies.
Kids' Way
"To support the local United Way mission to increase the organized capacity of people to care for themselves and others. Kids' Way instills in youth a sense of responsibility for the welfare of others." This site includes lots of fun stuff for kids such as arts/crafts projects and contests, as well as Kids' Way information, and curriculum for teachers.
Kids Care Clubs
The mission of Kids Care Clubs, a program of the Points of Light Foundation, is
to develop compassion and the spirit of service and philanthropy in elementary
and middle school aged youth. To that end, Kids Care Clubs provide young people
with hands-on volunteer opportunities to help others in their local and global communities.
The KCC Web site includes information about national projects and contests, as well as
inspirational stories about kid-driven initiatives.
Executive Service Corps of Houston
An organization of retired professionals who provide free consulting services to non-profit agencies in the Greater Houston area. Categories of consultation include human resources, public relations, board development, strategic planning, information systems, and an open invitation to find other possible categories where they may be of assistance.
Independent Sector
An organization that "brings together foundations, nonprofit groups, and corporate
giving programs to support philanthropy, volunteering and citizen action." This site
includes findings from national surveys on volunteerism and charitable giving .
The Corporation for National and Community Service
The Corporation is the nation’s largest grantmaker supporting service and volunteering.
Through its Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America programs, it provides
opportunities for Americans of all ages and backgrounds to express their patriotism while
addressing critical community needs.
Peace Corps
More than 140,000 Americans have been Peace Corps volunteers. Over 6500 are serving today in 94 countries in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, the Pacific, South and Central America, the Caribbean and Central Europe.
Houston Association of Volunteer Administrators (HAVA)
The Houston Association of Volunteer Administrators (HAVA) is the local professional
membership association for individuals working in the field of volunteer resources management.
HAVA is a dynamic organization which has grown to include volunteer management professionals
from community service agencies, hospitals, arts organizations, governmental institutions,
and corporations.
